2016 Volkswagen Passat

Volkswagen is undergoing a major storm in the US. It is alleged
that its 2.0 L, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engines have violated
emissions regulations.  The company will face heavy fines
if it will be found guilty.

Nonetheless, the company was not cowered and proceeded to
launch updated models of its lines in the US during the New
York Auto Show. Among the new models was Volkswagen Passat. The
car which has been given the “ 2016 Volkswagen Passat ” name
tag has received an extensive redesign both on the outside and
the inside. This is in a bid to boost its dwindling fortunes in
the US market.

The new 2016 Volkswagen Passat comes with the first ever R-line
model which is sportier than its counterparts for the US
market.  The vehicle will be offered in S, SE, SEL, SEL
Premium and the new R-Line trim levels.

2016 Volkswagen Passat Exterior

The new Passat has received some significant remodelling on its
exterior compared to the previous model.  The front fascia
has been revised and the new model features a new sculpted hood
design which has stronger character lines.

There is a new grille flanked by LED headlights and taillights.
The headlights are slimmer and feature lines that flow to the
4-bar grille. The lower grille has a more rectangular shape
than previous models. The bumpers both front and rear have also
been upgraded. In addition to the updated rear bumper, the rear
also features a chrome strip on the trunk. The strip has given
the vehicle a more grounded look and makes the taillights
appear lower.

On the sides, the vehicle still features chrome strips around
windows, the doors, the roof and also its side stamping remain
unchanged from the previous model. The new R-line has a
sportier exterior compared to others. It also features  a
rocker panel, a stylish front bumper, a modified diffuser and
will ride on 19-inch anthracite Salvador aluminium-alloy wheels
wrapped in 235/40 ZR tyres.

2016 Volkswagen Passat Interior

The cabin which will accommodate five passengers has been
upgraded to go with modern trends in the industry. VW has used
premium materials to outfit the cabin. There is a chrome and
black trim finish. The new model also offers both front and
rear heated seats and a new steering wheel.

Standard features include the new MIB II infotainment system
which uses capacitive touch sensor for gesture controls. The
MIB II is also the foundation of VW’s Car-Net system which
features App-connect technology like Android Auto, Apple
CarPlay and mirrorLink which allows integration of almost every
Smartphone. There is also an Easy-Open keyless access to the
trunk which requires one to move a foot near the back of the
vehicle to open it.

In terms of safety, the Passat is equipped with post-collision
braking system as standard for all models. Higher trims and
packages will feature forward collision warning, adaptive
cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot
monitoring, lane departure warning, parking assist and rear
traffic alert.

Engine Specs and Performance

During its launch, VW said that the 2016 Passat would continue
with 3 drive-train choices as the outgoing model. The base
engine is a 1.8 L, TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder unit. This
engine produces 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, new Passat with
this engine accelerate 0-60 mph in 7,5 sec and reach top speed
of 115 mph. It has an EPA rating of 38 mpg on highway
drive. The engine will be paired with a 6-speed automatic
transmission and it is not clear if a manual transmission will
be offered for the 2016 model.

The second engine is the 3.6 L VR6 which produces 280 hp and
258 lb-ft of torque. The third engine is the 2.0 L TDI diesel
4-cylinder engine. However, this engine was among those
implicated in the emissions scandal so it is likely that the
automaker will hold it until it is cleared of the allegations.
In fact, VW has already halted sale of current models equipped
with the TDI engines. We remain hopeful that the engine will be
available when the car hits deal showrooms.
