The Volkswagen Polo is a fun car to drive. It is fuel efficient
and comes with a more refined cabin than some other models
which cost much more. Volkswagen has managed to hook up the
hatchback with a mature and sophisticated character.
However, the current 5th generation of the car has
been criticized from some quarters as carrying a premium price
and lacking a quality infotainment system, features the
automaker is set to correct in the upcoming model.
The new model is designed by the automakers chief designer
Klaus Bischoff. Bischoff has borrowed the design cues of the
Golf hatchback which is doing well in the market. The 2016
Volkswagen Polo will have a sportier and edgier profile
and will be the first compact car to be based on the MQB
platform. With this platform, the Polo will be stiffer and
lighter making it more fuel efficient as well as improve its
2016 Volkswagen Polo Exterior
The exterior design of the new Polo will receive only minor
updates. The new vehicle takes the look of the VW Tiguan. As
said earlier it will be based on the MQB platform and its
structure will be constructed with steel and aluminum.
The vehicle is likely to have a longer wheelbase, a steeply
raked windscreen and a flatter roof. According to rumors, the
vehicle will be availed in two cabin styles one with 2 doors
and the other with 4 doors. The front fascia will have a
modified bumper and a redesigned grille. The headlights design
of the current model will be carried over; however, the
headlight housings will be mounted higher and will utilize LED
At the back, the Polo will get a redesigned bumper featuring a
wider cutout for the license plate. Its taillights will also be
updated and will feature diverse graphics. Depending on the
trim level, the hatchback will ride on either 15, 16 or 17-inch
2016 Volkswagen Polo Interior
Interior specs are still a mystery. However, according to our
credible sources, we understand that the cabin will feature a
3-spoke steering wheel, an updated instruments cluster;
modified center console with controls for the air conditioning
system, a 5-inch or 6.5 inch display and a rear view camera.
The automaker will also feature a quality infotainment system
which is what the current model lacks as well as a premium
sound system. The cabin will accommodate five passengers and
quality cloth will make the standard interior upholstery. For
safety, the vehicle will feature adaptive cruise control, post
collision mitigation system, and city emergency braking as well
as enhanced seatbelts and airbags.
Other likely features include Bluetooth connectivity, USB
ports, satellite radio, HD radio, Smartphone integration among
others. Check back for more updates.
We don’t have official details on the drive-trains as of this
writing. However, we understand that the 2016 VW Polo will
feature 5 different engine options. It will have 3 petrol
engines and 2 diesel ones.
The first engine on the base model will be a 1.0 L,3-cylinder
capable of 110 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque.
The second petrol engine will be a 1.4 L 3-cylinder unit good
for 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.
The last petrol engine is a 1.8L 3-cylinder good for 185 hp and
184 lb-ft of torque.
Switching to diesel engines, the first unit will be a 1.4L good
for 90 hp while the second engine is a 2.0 L tuned to produce
between 150 and 180 hp. The engines will be paired to either
manual or automatic transmission systems and power will be
channeled to front wheels as standard but there is an option
for all wheels drive.
Price and release date
Reports from Germany indicate that the Polo hatchback will
begin production in March in Europe and will go on sale in the
second quarter of 2016. As for the price, the Polo will start
MSRP at around $ 20,000 for the base model.
It is not clear which engines will be offered in the US but my
bet is the more powerful petrol and diesel engines while the
less powerful are likely to be offered in Europe and India.
Competition in this segment is ever rising; the 2016 Volkswagen
Polo will face competition from the new models of Renault Clio,
Mazda 2, Toyota Yaris and Skoda Fabia among others.
