2017 Kia Sportage

Kia is set to launch the fourth generation of one of their
longest-running models, the Kia Sportage. The compact crossover
dubbed the 2017 Kia Sportage has received a comprehensive
redesign which Kia says is inspired by the modern fighter jet.

The European version of the Sportage was first launched during
last year’s Frankfurt Auto show. Read along to find what
changes the automaker has introduced to the new Sportage;

2017 Kia Sportage Exterior

The 2017 Kia Sportage US version looks identical to the
European version. The model features the signature tiger nose
grille which is flanked by redesigned HID headlights.

The front bumper has also been redesigned and is integrated
with LED fog lights which aid in poorly illuminated terrains.
At the back, the vehicle’s taillights have been
simplified to generic teardrop shapes and are joined by a
chrome accent bar. I believe the previous Tiger-Nose shaped
taillights were very stylish and it’s a shame the automaker has
done away with them.

The vehicle also features shapely curves and creases around the
hood and door panels which is a shift from the outgoing model’s
more flatter and linear surfaces. The vehicle also features a
more sloping roofline and a longer spoiler which create a
swept-back and aggressive stance.

In terms of dimensions, the Sportage is bigger measuring 176.4
inches long which is a 1.6-inch increase. Its 105.1 –inch
wheelbase is also longer by 1.2 inches. Its height and width
remain unchanged. The vehicle rides on 19-inch wheels.

2017 Kia Sportage Interior

The cabin of the new Kia Sportage 2017 is roomier than
before. Passengers will enjoy the 0.2 inch increase in headroom
in front and 0.6 inches at the rear. Cargo space behind the
rear seats has also increased by 4.6 cubic feet to 30.7 cubic
feet. The cabin features metal elements and a huge dose of
soft-touch materials. It will be offered in either black and
beige or black and two-tone grey color schemes.

The base model is upholstered in a quality cloth. The EX and SX
trims on the other hand feature leather upholstered seats. The
SX also features a new, D-shaped , heated steering wheel
wrapped in leather, a stylish dashboard stitching,
aluminum alloy pedals and a piano black trim on its center
console. The SX further offers heated front seats with a 10-way
power adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support and an 8-way
power adjustable driver’s seat as options.

The Sportage cabin is very quiet courtesy of addition of extra
sound-absorbent materials, suspension improvements, and a lip
seal on the sunroof as well as a thicker front glass.

The base LX features a standard a 5.0-inch touch-screen with
Bluetooth connectivity and 160-watt audio system with SiriusXM
satellite radio. The EX on the other hand features a 7.0-inch
capacitive touch-screen which is integrated with the
automaker’s new UVO3 infotainment system. The system offers
Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 8 GB of music storage. The SX
Turbo trim on the other hand features an 8.0-inch touch-screen
which adds a navigation system.

Switching to safety matters, the Kia Sportage will feature lane
departure warning, ABS, blind spot monitoring, bi-xenon high
intensity headlights, rear cross-traffic alert, stability and
traction control, enhanced seatbelts and bolstered airbags. Its
body uses almost three times the amount of high-strength steel
compared to the outgoing model. This is meant to improve its
ratings in crash tests.

Engine Specs and Performance

Under the hood, the  Kia Sportage 2017 will feature two
drive-trains. The base engine will be a 2.4 L, 4-cylinder
engine which is capable of producing 181 hp and 175 l-ft of
torque. Compared to the outgoing models, the new engine has
lost 1 hp and gained 2 lb-ft of torque. This engine will be
featured o the LX and EX trims.

The top SX trim will be powered by a 2.0 L, turbocharged
4-cylinder engine which will come good with 241 hp and 260
lb-ft of torque compared to the outgoing model’s 260 hp and 269
lb-ft of torque. Both engines will be mated to a 6-speed
Sportmatic transmission system that sends power to either the
front wheels or all wheels. The automaker is yet to announce
the vehicle’s official EPA ratings, acceleration and top speed
